Dont buy September 4, 2010 Mr Bill (Pacific) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After 3 months when Number lock key is off letters will not work---key on numbers work/key off letters do not. Be aware of short Amazon return period -- 30 days. Check the Asus forums-lots of bugs in these eee units
Great for Ubuntu (or Linux) August 31, 2010 Henry I bought 2 units this computer from Amazon for my wife and as a gift for my father, but as I'm a Linux fan (Ubuntu to be more specific) I was always in doubt of buying or not a computer because of compatibility.
If this is your case, the search is over: Ubuntu 10.04 netbook version is 100% compatible. Wonderful, all working "out of the box": Screen, touchpad, wireless, sound, Fn-shortcuts.
For Ubuntu you don't need extra memory. This computer's hardware is more than enought to do everything you want: internet, movies, songs, etc... all things at the same time.
The battery (at least for me) lasts 5 hours of use on Ubuntu but I was really multitasking!!! Ubuntu can turn this small and light computer into a machine capable of doing almost everything.
I'm not sure about the other distributions, but I guess would be quite similar.
Hope that this could help.
Perfect For My Needs - Highly Recommended August 31, 2010 CFH (Blue Ridge Summit, PA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The ASUS "Eee PC 1005HA-MU17-BK Netbook" is exactly what I was looking for in a highly portable PC. I work from home full time and am always on-call (often have to work off-hours or weekends\Holidays) so it is necessary for me to always have access to a PC, especially when traveling. My work issued full-sized Thinkpad T62 really is too big to use in tight spaces (like in a car, but not when driving :-) or on a fast food restaurant table, so after much research selected this ASUS Netbook as a portable solution. Here are my observations:
Setup -
* Box included the Netbook, Battery, Instructions, Power Supply, and a CD (didn't need to use)
* First time powering it on took about 20 minutes to configure the options (language, time, etc) and self-configure Windows 7
* Detected my home Wi-Fi and asked for security key
* Automatically ran the included security software and that was it
Pros -
+ Size; big enough to still have a functional screen and keyboard yet small enough to be easily carried
+ Inexpensive; since my company was not paying for this, it had to be affordable
+ Wi-Fi; supports 802.11a\g\n so it can connect wirelessly to the Internet (I also "My-Fi" it to my Sprint HTC EVO)
+ Built In Camera; has very acceptable .3mp webcam that is useful when using Skype (I have a daughter away at college)
+ Long Battery Life; the included battery can actually last run for 8 hours and I also picked up AGPtek 7200mAh Laptop Battery For ASUS Eee-PC 1001 1101HA 1101HGO 1005 1005H 1005HA 1005HAB Series Laptops P/N: Al32 AL31-1005
+ Large Hard Drive; 250gb is a good sized drive in a Netbook
+ Little "Bloatware"; does not come with a lot of pre-installed junk that I would have to delete
+ Fast Booting; literally under a minute
+ Good Tech Support; I had a problem with the webcam on my first one, ASUS tech support quickly diagnosed the problem and Amazon did a "Next Day" replacement!
Cons -
- Can have a little keyboard lag when multiple windows\applications are running, but that is to be expected with only 1gb of memory (UPDATE 9/3/2010 - Installed Crucial 2GB 256Mx64PC2-5300 CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory and it made a big improvement in performance)
Misc -
* Black finish really is finger print magnet
* Windows 7 Starter has a little bit of a learning curve, but not too bad with a little playing
* No built in CD\DVD drive, I use a Samsung USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive for Mac and PC SE-S084C/RSBN (Gloss Black) when needed
* Has 3 USB Ports, VGA Monitor Connector (no HDMI), and an Ethernet Port (didn't test)
Having the proper expectations is important when choosing a Netbook, it is not a "Powerhouse Gaming PC" (nor is it priced like one), but it is a perfectly functional travel PC that is a real value for the features it includes.
Highly Recommended!

Bad chioce of language! August 29, 2010 jp 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm very dissapointed with the product, it arrived with windows 7 starter in german from all languges in the world! Why not english? it was purchased in the US. The purpose is probably to make you upgrade as soon as you recieve the computer because its useless. This was my first and last purchase from amazon.
Folks it's a notebook not a laptop or desktop & it works very well. August 14, 2010 Frank R. (Sacramento, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had dozens of desktops and laptops going way back to my IBM PC25, 1984. Just like any other products you get what you pay for. There are netbooks that out of the box will cost you $700 to $900, but you selected a product in the high $200 to low $300 range. And for that price this is one very nice netbook. The Atom N280 is a couple of generations old now, but very adequate. Just like any computer when you buy on the cheap you will find the performance isn't up to expectations of the higher priced system you didn't want to pay for. How many of us hated the speed of our desktop or laptop until we upgraded the RAM, and then Wow it was great. So if you want faster and more features, well go spend more for those features and find the notebook that matches up. On this system I went to 2 GB of RAM and upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium, since I had several Win7 upgrades that were offered last year at $49 here on Amazon. I have Office 2007 and a lot of other software that is also on my Laptop and desktop and it all works great. I sync all my files on all my systems so the software is mirrored on the notebook just like the other systems. I also have a newer HP 210-1090NR with an Atom N450 1.66. The HP has 1 GB of RAM and cannot be upgraded to 2 GB no matter what operating system you have. Side by side this 1005HA-MU17 and the HP are equally as fast when I run identical tasks or programs at the same time on both. The HP cost me $180 more than the 1005HA-MU17. So faster processor but less memory is equal to slower processor more memory. So bottom line if you bought a Corolla and you complain it doesn't have the features of the Avalon, who's to blame?
